Tauranga police are trying to locate the victim of a brutal assault in Mount Maunganui last night.
Police say the man was stomped on the head, in front of witnesses, on Marine Parade about 11.30pm.
Detective Kevin Shields said police chased and arrested the offender.
"Witnesses saw a man stomping on the head of the victim numerous times.
"A police foot patrol was moving through the crowd to intervene. The offender ran across the road, to the main Mount Beach where he was located and arrested," said Shields.
Although the victim was seen staggering through the crowd after the assault, he has not been seen since.
"He was heavily bleeding and may have lost a couple of teeth in the attack," he said.
Police are also interested to hear from anyone who witnessed this unprovoked assault.
