Christchurch police investigating the discovery of a baby's body, are appealing for help from the public.
The body of the baby was found at a boarding house in Opawa on Wednesday morning.
Detective Inspector Tom Fitzgerald says they are keen to hear from anyone who knows of a woman who has recently been in late term pregnancy but does not now have a new baby.
He says this could be from late last year until now.
Detective Inspector Fitzgerald says family, friends, a care-giver, midwife or GP may have the information they need.
"We need to find the child's mother. Someone will have knowledge of a recently late term pregnant woman who now does not have a child," he says.
The house where the baby was found has ten bedrooms and accommodates up to 12 boarders, who police have moved to alternative accommodation as they examine the house.
Neighbours say there have been regular noise issues with the house and there were problems on Tuesday night.
The police inquiry team also wanted to speak to everyone who had lived at the house in the last six months.
"We will locate them all but it would help us if anyone who has lived there recently could contact the team at Christchurch South Police," says Fitzgerald.
A post mortem is being conducted on the baby's body on Thursday
morning and may give police greater clues as to the timing of such
things as the baby's birth.
