One of two men assaulted in Alexandra early on Sunday is in an induced coma in Dunedin Hospital tonight, police say.
The other man has a fractured nose and bruised eyes.
Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Blackie of Otago rural police says 12 staff are working on the case and although no arrests have been made so far, police have a number of positive leads they hope will help identify the assailants.
A scene examination has been conducted in and around three streets in the town and area inquires will continue on Monday.
