Police are still searching for a driver last seen fleeing the scene of a fatal car crash in Auckland.

Passenger David Sionepulu, 19, from Panmure, died after the car crashed into a hedge on Ngapipi Road in Orakei shortly after 2am.

Witnesses spotted the driver running from the scene.

The driver, or anyone who may know who the driver was, is urged to contact Glen Innes police.

Meanwhile, two people are fighting for the lives after a car crash in nearby Okahu Bay.

The driver and passenger, both middle-aged men, were transported to Auckland Hospital with life threatening injuries after their car crashed into trees on Tamaki Drive shortly before midnight.

Auckland City District Road Policing Manager Inspector Gavin Macdonald said it is likely speed and alcohol played a part in both crashes - both of which were entirely preventable.

"It's frustrating for police and the public that some drivers continue to ignore the proliferation of messages and warnings about the dangers of driving too quickly and drinking and driving.

"As long as people continue to do this, families will be torn apart by road fatalities and long term injuries."

Anyone with information about the Tamaki Drive crash is asked to contact Auckland Police Serious Crash Unit on 09 359 3111.
