Police believe their main suspect for the murder of Auckland taxi driver Hiren Mohini a month ago is now overseas.

Information from the public has helped to identify a man shown on CCTV footage. Police are now trying to track the man down overseas.

Taxi drivers are relieved he may have fled the country.

Taxi Federation executive director Tim Reddish says taxi drivers are thrilled the man has been identified.

Reddish hopes police will be able to track him down.

Taxi security reviewed

Taxi companies say the identification of a driver's killer doesn't mask the fact cabbies are still at risk.

Taxi drivers will hear more from the Government this week about security in cabs.

Reddish says a safety report is expected back from the Government within the next week.

He hopes the Government's position will be finalised by mid to late March.
