Police renewed their appeal on Wednesday for information about a man involved in an attempted bank robbery and associated bomb threat in Wellington last week.
Hundreds of office workers were evacuated and a significant area of the central business district closed after the man made the threat.
A man standing outside the National Bank in Featherston St handed a note to a passerby and asked that it be given to a teller, about 2.40pm on December 9.
The man then stood at the door watching as the note, which contained the threat a bomb was in the building, was delivered before walking away.
Most of Featherston St, between Lambton Quay and Brandon St, and the adjoining streets were cordoned off for four hours while officers from the Specialist Search Group with bomb detecting dogs combed the building. No bomb was found.
"The threat used by this man to facilitate a bank robbery caused major disruption to the public and many CBD businesses over a number of hours," Detective Sergeant Chris Moore says.
"CCTV footage has revealed clear images of the man police are seeking who is seen outside the bank. There will be members of the public that will recognise him. If you know this man or recognise his clothing, please contact us," he says.
Moore says police are concerned that a person could trade on public fear in such a way to facilitate his own greed.
The man police are seeking is thought to be aged in his 20s, and described as having olive skin, being of slim build, and about 1.70m tall. He has short dark hair and was wearing a light- coloured baseball cap, a red jacket, blue jeans and a dark backpack.
