Police say they have recovered a number of stolen grave plaques from a scrap metal merchant.

Police said they will be making further visits to Auckland and Northland second hand dealers, scrap metal merchants, gold buyers and automotive dismantlers in the lead-up to Christmas.

Inspector Gary Davey of Waitemata police said a number of organisations were turning a blind eye to stolen goods, while some were "actively involved" in the distribution of stolen goods.

Davey said there had also been a rise in the number of stolen cars in Auckland and Northland and a large number were ending up as scrap metal.

Police say automotive dismantlers should check vehicle parts on the police stolen vehicle database.

"Automotive Dismantlers will now have no excuses for any stolen vehicle parts found on their property now that they can easily check registrations, engine numbers, chassis numbers and VIN numbers" said Davey.
