Police say they're ready to crack down on boyracers, as the illegal street racing laws are now in place.

The two new laws which give police more power, including the confiscation of vehicles, took effect over night.

Councils have also been given the power to introduce bylaws banning street cruising.

Superintendent Paula Rose says they don't expect too much of a backlash and urges boyracers to make good choices.

She says they can choose whether they have regular interaction with police or not.

Police say they will be paying particular attention to offences involving public disorder, dangerous behaviour and excessive noise.

However some boyracers believe the new street racer laws could mean more police pursuits.

Christchurch City Council's already said it's eager to get the necessary by-law in place early next year, to ban cruising around the four avenues.

But self confessed Christchurch car enthusiast Brad reckons the ban on street cruising will bring more problems.
