A man has handed himself into police following the death of a pedestrian in Kaitaia last night.

The victim, a 28-year-old woman, was hit by a car on Pukepoto Road at around 10pm.

Police launched a homicide inquiry after the woman died from her injuries in Whangarei Hospital early this morning.

She has been identified as Georgina Manuel of Kaitaia, a mother of two.

At 11.45am today, a 45-year-old man handed himself into Whangarei police station in relation to the incident.

Police are speaking to the man and inquiries are continuing.

The vehicle involved has been located and is undergoing a forensic examination.

Police are appealing to anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

A post mortem on the deceased woman will be carried out in Auckland tomorrow to determine the cause of death.
