Police now know the identity of the main suspect in the murder of Auckland taxi driver Hiren Mohini, but may struggle to interview him if he has fled to China.
Father-of-two Mohini, 39, died on January 31 in Mt Eden after he was repeatedly stabbed in his cab by a passenger he picked up in the Auckland central business district.
Police released an image of a man of Asian appearance they believed may be a suspect in the killing. Film clips showed the man getting into Mohini's taxi and carrying a bag later found with blood on it near where Mohini died.
Police confirmed on Saturday they now knew the identity of the man after people who knew him saw the images and contacted them.
They will not comment on where he was but there are reports he has fled to China.
To interview him, police will need co-operation from Chinese authorities, which could take months if the case of Rotorua couple Leo Gao and Kara Hurring is anything to go by.
The pair skipped the country for Hong Kong in May last year after Westpac mistakenly put $10 million into Gao's account. Westpac had recovered most of the money with $3.8 million remaining at large.
Police are still seeking the help of Chinese authorities to find the pair and extradite them.
