Forensic specialists are examining a section of a track in Port Chalmers near Dunedin where a passer-by found a man's body on Wednesday.
The man in his 30s, who police have not yet named, was killed violently.
His body was discovered about 1pm off a track in the area known as Scott Memorial, on Blueskin Rd near Port Chalmers.
Police examined the scene on Wednesday.
Locals have told the Southland Times that the body could have been there for days.
Police have appealed for anyone who saw anything unusual in the area to contact them.
They also want to hear from anyone who saw a grey vehicle in the car park near the scene, or any other traffic in the area in the 24 hours before the grisly discovery.
