Unnamed officer being treated by medical staff after being shot - Source: ONE News
A police officer was shot in the leg by a man in Manukau on Tuesday morning, during a routine vehicle stop.
The incident happened at approximately 4:15am around Buckingham Crescent and Allenby Road.
"A young cop has been shot ... he's still alive and in Middlemore (Hospital)," Detective Inspector Mark Gutry from Counties Manukau police told NZPA.
He says details were scarce and "troops were being rounded up" to assist with the situation.
Police say they have a person in custody but haven't yet made an arrest.
They are not 100% sure if they have the man who pulled the trigger, and are still looking for a second person.
District Commander Mike Bush says several people are assisting them with their inquiries.
The situation is still evolving, and the cordons around the Papatoetoe streets involved are still in place.
It is reported that the 28-year-old officer was shot twice with no warning, while walking up a driveway to check a car that had its hazard lights on.
He had only been in the police force for a year.
People are still being warned to stay indoors as a precautionary measure.
There have been reports saying the gunman was taking random shots at people and animals after shooting the officer.
Middlemore Hospital says the shot officer is in a serious condition and his family is with him.
