A cyclist remains critically ill in hospital but police say it is far too early to consider charging a woman driver who apparently knocked down a group of riders on Auckland's waterfront during the weekend.

Only one of the group of 20 cyclists was badly hurt when a car apparently failed to stop at a stop sign on Tamaki Drive on Saturday morning.

Three others were hurt, none seriously.

Police say more witnesses have to be interviewed.

It is also too soon to say if the cyclists were riding in a tight group or if they were spread out, police say.

The badly hurt cyclist, Greg Paterson, has head chest and neck injuries.

The cyclists were part of a recreational cycling group.
