Police have named the three teenagers killed in an overnight crash in Invercargill.

Jesse Langeveld, 19, and passengers Tyler Parry and Ethan Peek, both 16, died when the car they were in slammed into a building just after midnight.

Police say they were driving a modified Honda Civic and had been street racing earlier in the night.

A fourth male, also 16, is in Southland Hospital with critical injuries.

Police say it appeared speed was a factor, but serious crash investigators are still on site.

Mayor Tim Shadbolt says in a small city like Invercargill, everyone knows someone who knows someone.

Shadbolt says there's a good chance he met those killed, either through the City's Youth Council or their families.
