An Otago man has been charged in relation to the car crash that killed Timaru businessman Allan Hubbard.
Oamaru police today charged the 40-year-old man with careless driving causing death and careless driving causing injury.
Allan Hubbard, 83, died in a helicopter en route to Dunedin Hospital, while his 82-year-old wife Jean, who was driving the car, suffered fracture injuries when they collided head-on with a ute on State Highway One near Oamaru last September.
Hubbard, whose fortune was estimated to be $550 million, was facing 50 fraud and related charges laid by the Serious Fraud Office.
Taxpayers forked out $1.7 billion to bail out South Canterbury Finance investors when the company collapsed in 2010.
The accused has been summonsed to appear in the Dunedin District Court later this week on Friday.
