Two men are sought by police following the aggravated robbery of two French tourists in the Bay of Plenty yesterday.

The two 21-year-old tourists were hitch hiking from Mount Maunganui to Rotorua when they were picked up in a vehicle by the suspects.

After about five minutes of driving, the vehicle pulled over along State Highway Two in Papamoa and the occupants assaulted the tourists and stole money, passports, some clothing and other possessions.

The two victims received minor injuries as a result of the attack.

The vehicle, described as a black four-door sedan, was then driven away toward Rotorua. The registration number is thought to be ZR9879, which is registered to a black Nissan Pulsar.

Police are now trying to identify the men, described as Maori or Pacific Islander, both aged between 20 and 30 years old.

Although traumatised by the attack, the two French men are thankful for the many offers of assistance from within the Bay of Plenty, Auckland and Hawke's Bay areas.
