Police are hunting three armed men after a hold up at a pub in Manukau.

The masked men entered the Bellbird Arms Tavern in Manurewa armed with a sawn off shot-gun just after midday Tuesday.

Police say the men ordered staff to the ground and demanded money from the safe and TAB counter.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Malcolm says they made off with around $20,000.

He says they left by a rear entrance and took off in a vehicle that was stolen earlier in the day from East Tamaki.

Malcolm says they were all wearing very casual clothing like puffer jackets and hoods.

He says one was wearing a red scarf around his face, another was wearing a blue scarf and a black and white jacket.

Malcolm says there was a fourth person who was the getaway driver.

He says that vehicle has been found.
