Police investigating a violent homicide near Dunedin believe they now know the name of the victim.

A member of the public discovered the body of a man, aged about 30, off a track in the area known as Scott Memorial, on Blueskin Rd near Port Chalmers, about 1pm Wednesday.

"It is apparent that the deceased man died by violent means," Detective Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis says.

Police called for public information about the man's identity, and say several leads have come through, although they are yet to formally identify the man.

Croudis says a grey vehicle was located in the car park immediately below the scene and police want to hear about any sightings of other vehicles in the area over the last 24 hours.

The area is well known as a lookout.

People with any information should call Dunedin Central Police Station on 471 4800.
