Police have found the mother of a baby girl found dead at the back of a Hutt Valley property yesterday morning.
Hutt Valley Inspector Shane Cotter said police have located a woman in her early 20s, who has been identified as the mother, earlier this afternoon.
"When located by Police, this woman had not sought any medical attention, however she has since been hospitalised this afternoon and is being treated for complications as a result of the birth," said Cotter.
Police undertook a major search of the Lower Hutt area to find the mother after her baby was discovered wrapped in a towel at the back of a Taita Drive property yesterday morning.
"The baby girl appeared to be no older than 24 hours old. She still had part of her umbilical cord attached," said Cotter.
Police enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the baby's birth are continuing and a post-mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow.
