Police are looking for a man who drove through a routine checkpoint today and then abandoned his car with a hammer and several knives in it.
Lower Hutt police were seeking Mathew George Kidman after he breached his parole release conditions.
Kidman drove through a routine police checkpoint under the Wingate bridge, in Lower Hutt at 1.20pm.
Police followed him towards Stokes Valley and found his car in Manuka Street.
Kidman had left the vehicle, which was seized by police. When they searched the car they found a hammer and several knives within easy reach of the driver's seat.
Inspector Shane Cotter said police were concerned to find the weapons in a vehicle being driven by Kidman.
"We want to locate Mr Kidman as soon as possible, without incident or injury to anyone," Cotter said.
"He was in prison for drugs and firearms offences and it appears he is arming himself with weapons again."
Cotter urged anyone who knows where Mathew Kidman is to contact the police immediately.
Police said Kidman should not be approached.
He is described as a 31-year-old, male Caucasian, 187cm tall, of thin build.
