Police will be exempt from the ban on using mobile phones when they are driving.

The Police Association says new laws on cellphone use in cars will not affect the way police operate now.

It says there has been a policy for officers to pull over if their phone rings in the car.

However, the law will allow calls made in the line of duty to be taken at the same time as driving.

Fire and ambulance staff will be subject to the same penalty as anyone else if they are caught, an $80 fine and 20 demerit points.
