A large police team is continuing to investigate the death of a 47-year-old man in Queenstown late on Thursday.

Mark James Smith died after being found lying unconscious in a central street at about 11.30pm.

A 34-year-old man was arrested on Friday and charged with assault.

The man, who was granted interim name suppression, appeared in Queenstown District Court and was remanded in custody to appear in Invercargill District Court on November 27.

Police say further charges may be laid.

Senior Sergeant John Fookes has expressed his gratitude for the outstanding response to a police request for witnesses.

He says the large team of investigators has been kept very busy following up the information.

"A picture of the events on the night is starting to develop but there is still a long way to go."

He says police are still very keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed an altercation on Camp Street on Thursday night.
