Police have charged a man with the murder of another man following a fight in a Kapiti Coast bar last night.
The 22-year-old has been charged in connection with the death of 20-year-old Sean Strongman-Lintern, from Paraparaumu.
Police have this evening confirmed the deceased man's name, and said his family have requested privacy at this time.
Earlier Inspector John Price confirmed detectives were interviewing a man in his 20s who was detained last night.
"Police have arrived and we have apprehended one person, brought them back to the station where they're now helping us with our enquries," Price said.
Police were called to the Kapiti Lights complex in Paraparaumu at around 12.40am following reports of a fight in the carpark.
A 20-year-old man was found dead at the scene when police arrived.
ONE News understands he had been drinking in the Monteiths Kapiti Junction bar earlier in the night, when he got involved in a "pushing and shoving" altercation at the bar.
He was removed from the premises but an hour and a half later his body was found around the corner.
A large team of police are working on the case but Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Oxnam said they were at an early stage of their investigation and will not be releasing the name of the man until his family had been informed.
"As a result of the post-mortem examination carried out this afternoon, police are now seeking any information relating to a knife or similar item that may have been discarded in the Kapiti Lights area or along State Highway One south of Paraparaumu to Pukerua Bay," he said.
More than 30 police staff investigating the death, and a scene examination took place today in the Kapiti Lights complex.
The 22-year-old charged with the man's murder will appear in the Porirua District Court on Monday.
The death comes just over a month since a Kapiti teenager died after an alleged assault in Paraparaumu.
Seventeen-year-old Izak Rennie Millanta was found unconscious at the back of KFC in the Coastlands Mall car park in Paraparaumu, with only a graze on his head on August 11.
Paramedics had to resuscitate him at the scene before rushing him to Wellington where he underwent emergency surgery but died surrounded by family and friends.
A 25-year-old Paraparaumu man has been charged with his assault and remanded in custody until October 5.
The area has become known as a blackspot for violence, says ONE News reporter Heather Duplessis Allan.
Kapiti Coast District Councillor K Gurunathan said bars should close earlier.
"Do taxpayers have to fund an increase in police presence? Wouldn't it be cheaper and much more sensible to just reduce the opening hours of the pubs?"
