A teenager is dead and another injured after they were hit by a police patrol car on a rural Northland highway.

The accident happened at Ohaeawai north of Kaikohe just before midnight Saturday.

Police say two young men from Kaeo were walking along an unlit open road when they were struck by police car on a routine patrol travelling from Kaikohe to Moerewa. It's understood the pair had been at a party at a nearby house.

They say 16-year-old Rawire Wilson died at the scene. The other young man was airlifted to Whangarei hospital and he is in a stable condition.

Three investigations by police, the coroner and the Police Conduct Authority are now underway.

Both teenagers were from Kaeo, 47 kilometres north west or Moerewa.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who were in the area at the time of the crash to contact Detective Sergeant Sam Bindon of the Kaikohe Police.
