Police are appealing to the Asian commmunity for help as they continue to hunt the killer of Auckland taxi driver Hiren Mohini.
Police also want to know if anyone recognises a distinctive knitted cap with a large white logo, found at the murder scene in the suburb of Mount Eden.
Father of two Mohini, 39, died soon after he was attacked by a passenger in a frenzied flurry of knife blows early on the morning of Sunday January 31.
The passenger ran off but police believe a vital clue was a blood stained bag found near the death scene and security camera footage of a man in Queen Street.
On Tuesday, police revealed details of the distinctive cap.
Detective Senior Sergeant Hywel Jones says the cap has been undergoing
forensic examination.
"The bag and the cap are of great interest to our investigation and we want
to know who owned, used or wore them," Jones says.
"We're appealing more strongly to the Asian communities in and around the Auckland CBD this week as, unfortunately, we've become aware that a lot of those we canvassed overnight on Saturday February the 6th and Sunday the 7th, weren't aware of Hiren Mohini's murder and our subsequent homicide investigation," Jones says.
"Given that nearly 30%of the central Auckland's population is Asian, it's vital that they know how important it is for us to get any information from them that they might have about Mohini's killer, who is still on the loose."
Anyone with information should call police on 0800 444 014.
Anonymous callers can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
