A 200 metre cordon was placed around a cargo plane during a radiation scare at Auckland Airport.

The Fire Service was called to the international section of the airport just before 8pm and confirmed that radiation had been picked up on a freighter aircraft.

Three fire engines, including a hazmat unit, and a technical liaison officer were sent to the scene. Members of the hazmat unit entered the cargo hold after doing an external check to see where the radiation was highest.

No passengers are believed to have been on board the aircraft.

The Fire Service said  it is a rare occurrence and could have been potentially be dangerous. Airport authorities said the measures taken were precautionary.

No ambulance personnel were required and there were no evacuations.

Flights and operations at the airport were not affected.
