An aircraft pilot is dead after his plane crashed in Northland on Friday afternoon.

The crash happened about 3.55pm at One Tree Point, six km northwest of Marsden Point and 38km southeast of Whangarei.

The pilot of the small plane was killed instantly and several people received minor injuries trying to rescue the pilot after the plane burst into flames.

Witnesses told ONE News the plane took off from a paddock and crashed moments later with strong winds believed to be a factor.

The plane was totally ablaze and it did set off a scrub fire in the area which fire fighters extinguished.
