A life-size statue of the legendary Kiwi race horse Phar Lap was unveiled in his south Canterbury hometown of Timaru on Wednesday.
It has taken nearly 80 years, but now the world finally has a life-size full flight bronze statue of the horse that captured the hearts of millions.
New Zealand thoroughbred breeder Patrick Hogan says it will show the world Phar Lap was a New Zealand horse.
"So many claimed Phar Lap and sure he belongs to everybody but the bottom line is, and it took a long time to get here, this will make people all throughout the world realise where he came from and began his life."
Phar Lap had a stellar career, striding into racing history by winning a Melbourne Cup and two Cox Plates, but he died mysteriously in the United States in 1932.
But at his statue's unveiling, they celebrated his life with a replica replay and the $320,000 statue.
Detailing on the statue shows the length of Phar Lap's stride, while the fountains make the noise of his gallop and his hoof is placed on a map of New Zealand.
The statue's sculptor Joanne Sullivan-Giessler says everyone involved in the artwork has gone the extra mile to ensure its completion.
"It's like the spirit of Phar Lap was carrying everyone through because it wasn't an easy ride."
Timaru Mayor Janie Annear says the statue will be a huge tourist attraction for the city.
