Police investigating the murder of Auckland taxi driver Hiren Mohini have identified a young man they want to speak to.

They have released CCTV footage taken from the central city and are appealing to the public to help them locate the person in it.

Hiren Mohini, 39, was killed in a frenzied attack, which ended in a car crash in the Auckland suburb of Mt Eden.

The CCTV footage is of a man walking along Queen St at about 100am on January 31, shortly before Mohini collected his last passenger and was brutally attacked and murdered in his taxi on View Rd, Mt Eden.

Detective Senior Sergeant Hywel Jones says the man in the footage appears to have been carrying a bag similar to the blue tubular-shaped one which was recovered from a nearby property on Monday night.

"This bag has blood on it, was found in the neighbourhood and it's possible that the man pictured was carrying it,"  Jones says.

A funeral service was held on Thursday for the father-of-two at Waikumete Cemetery in Waitakere.

A hearse carrying Mohini's body was followed by a cavalcade of 300 taxis, most flying black flags from their radio aerials as a mark of respect.

His family described Mohin's murder as an "unimaginable and incomprehensible event" and his killer as "barbaric".

Anyone who has information about who the man is or where he can be located, should call the police.

Anonymous callers can phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
