Persistence has paid off for a previous finalist in the National Bank Young Farmer of the Year contest.

Tasman's Grant McNaughton has taken out this year's title after being a grand finalist in 2007.

The 26-year-old has spent the past year farming in Central Canterbury.

He says the competition is a mix of hard work, study and physical fitness.

McNaughton beat six other grand finalists in three days of gruelling competition in Gore.

He takes away more than $100,000 in prizes.
