The origins of the humble pavlova are once again up for debate.
A Rangiora church is re-publishing what it says is the first ever published pavlova recipe.
Reverend Christine Allan-Johns says it first appeared in the Rangiora mother's union cookbook in 1933, two years before a similar one was printed in Australia.
She said the Anglican parish of St John the Baptist has the recipe in a new cookbook to raise funds for the church.
The recipe is only a little different to today's.
"Quite small, small pavlova cakes they call it, and there's no vinegar so it's just egg whites, sugar, and a bit of cornflour, really," she says.
And an Otago University professor says she has an even earlier copy of the recipe from 1929.
