All 60 passengers onboard a burning ferry were unhurt and have been safely transferred to shore at Gulf Harbour.

The 17 metre-long vessel Discovery One  reported a fire in their engine room 1.8 km east of Campbells Bay on Auckland's North Shore just after 6pm tonight.

A navy vessel was on scene within ten minutes and escorted the ferry, which at that stage had managed to contain the fire to one engine.

Coastguard vessels arrived on scene shortly after, providing assistance to berth the disabled vessel in Gulf Harbour Marina.

The vessel has since been cleared by fire services.

Mark Leevers, duty officer for Coastguard's Northern Region said all passengers onboard the vessel were unhurt and have been safely transferred to shore at Gulf Harbour.
