A man has been killed in an adventure sport accident at Treble Cone skifield.
The victim, a 40-year-old Australian who lived in Wanaka, was 'speedflying' when he crashed around midday. Speedflying involves flying and skiing down a mountain at extreme speed.
Wanaka police search and rescue coordinator Sergeant Aaron Nicholson said the man had launched from Pub Corner on the Treble Cone skifield road, a popular area for canopy flying.
Other flyers in the area gathered at the scene, raised the alarm, and performed CPR for about 40 minutes but were unable to resuscitate him.
Nicholson said police sent a volunteer alpine cliff rescue team from LandSAR Wanaka to the scene, but the man had already died.
The body has been removed by helicopter from the crash site and the death has been referred to the Coroner.
His name and other details will not be released until next of kin have been notified.
