A woman has died in Dunedin Hospital after she was involved in a single vehicle crash yesterday.

Police attended the single vehicle crash on State Highway 1 in Palmerston at around 7.30pm yesterday, where it is believed the driver of the car lost control around a corner.

Police say the 31-year-old driver died from head injuries sustained during the crash.

A local family were in the car at the time of the crash, including their infant daughter.

Police have praised the family for the correct use of a child seat to restrain a baby travelling in the vehicle.

They credit the infant surviving the crash to the correct fitting and use of a quality child restraint.

The Invercargill Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating the crash and the matter has been referred to the Coroner.
