A mother and daughter have had to set a fair clip in the shearing shed, chasing world records.

Mother and daughter Marg and Ingrid Baynes took on the world one lamb at a time in the remote King Country settlement of Mangapehi.

"I've always enjoyed shearing and I've enjoyed having our children shearing with us. And I though tit would be nice to get a record with one of our children before I got too old," says Marg Baynes.

The charge for world glory started at 7am on Tuesday on the dot. Up for grabs were two world records - the women's two stand and the women's eight-hour individual record. And of course the one that counts - who's the best out of mum and daughter.

"Up until today I've been the master but now the pupil is the master," says Marg Baynes.

Both world records are new but don't think they will just be handed out. The girls had to keep the quality of their shearing up or it would be all over.

"We are just looking for wool left on and skin cuts and trying to keep that to a minimum. So they have to shear to a certain standard," says Hugh McCarroll, referee.

"We had a bit of a fright yesterday because we did like 10 sheep and stopped and we went out the back and looked and we would have had a few frights. We would've had a warning so today we have been focusing on our job," says Ingrid Baynes.

And it was all go with eight hours shearing and only three breaks, and then it was back on.

Emily Welsh, the woman's nine-hour record holder says the energy you use is like doing two marathons back to back.

To keep spirits high music was key and so was the support of the crowd. Blokes watching on were impressed with the girls' efforts.

"They will end up with over 400 each. So that's a good day. A damn good day. A lot of blokes have not shorn 400 sheep in a day," says one man.

It was a good day indeed for the two women, with world records and the first mother and daughter to do so.

They hoped to shear 800 lambs but managed 923 collectively. Ingrid, with 470, pipped her mother's total.
