Two men critically ill with brain injuries had been drinking when they fell 60 metres from Lion Rock at Piha Beach on Auckland's west cost, say police.

The two men, aged 18 and 31, walked past warning signs and a barrier warning of erosion danger and fell onto rocks from near the top of Lion Rock early on Wednesday morning.

The pair was in a group of seven who drove to Piha from a house in west Auckland, Detective Senior Sergeant Stan Brown from Waitakere police told The New Zealand Herald.

Brown said they had yet to speak to the two men but had been told what happened by a third man who was with them when they fell.
