Police still don't know what events led to two men falling more than 60 metres off Piha's Lion Rock.

The men are fighting for their lives in Auckland Hospital after the fall, which included two sheer cliff faces, just after midnight Tuesday.

A person who was with the injured pair alerted emergency services and they were taken to Auckland Hospital by the Westpac rescue helicopter.

The two men, aged 18 and 31, have head, chest and limb fractures and are described as being in a critical condition.

A five-man police team, including search and rescue specialists and photographer, spent much of Wednesday at the scene. They have not been able to talk to the men and won't speculate on the incident.

Police are asking for sightings of a white Nissan utility vehicle that was seen at Lion Rock overnight Tuesday.

Police are investigating why the men were on the 100-metre high rock. They were in a restricted area above the walking track.
