Animal rights activists are outraged and have accused several Auckland bars of cruelty after they installed an arcade game called Catch A Cray.
The aim of the game is to catch a crayfish with a metal hook usually used to grab stuffed toys.
But animal welfare groups say it's torture for the crayfish and are concerned over the controversial game.
New Zealand's chief animal inspector can't believe the game is happening.
"It's just utterly abhorrent," says Charles Cadwaller.
While he's concerned about the conditions the crayfish are kept in, he is currently unsure whether it is actually against the law.
But the game's owner is adamant it is above-board and the animals are treated well.
"Crayfish tanks are all over the country...it's just a way of presenting them," says Patrick Chandulal.
The RNZSPCA promises to look further into the legality of the game.
