An Otago University student studying for exams in her Dunedin home was bashed unconscious by an intruder on Wednesday afternoon.

The 21-year-old was alone in her family home in Scobie Rd, Waverley, when the attack happened between 1.45pm and 2.15pm.

She was taken to Dunedin Hospital for treatment to a head injury and was in a serious condition on Wednesday night.

Prior to the attack the woman phoned her mother, who worked nearby, after becoming alarmed at noises in the house.

Detective Senior Sergeant Steve McGregor, of Dunedin police says the mother arrived home a short time later to find her daughter unconscious in her bedroom with a head injury and what was believed to be the weapon used in the attack lying nearby.

Police will not say what weapon was used.

Some personal property had been disturbed, but it is not known if anything was stolen.

McGregor says police are treating the investigation "quite seriously".
