One dead in Chch fire

One person is dead following a house fire in central Christchurch on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene just after 4pm.

Fire Service Area Commander Dan Coward says the stone house was well ablaze when crews arrived at the scene on the corner of Fitzgerald Avenue and Cashel Street.

He says there were initial reports someone was trapped inside.

Coward says the person was found dead.

Investigators are piecing together exactly what happened.
