One man has been shot dead and another critically injured in Matamata overnight.

Scene guards are in place at two addresses in the town this morning following the shooting incidents.

Waikato Field Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Karl Thornton, said emergency services were called to a Mowbray Rd, Waharoa address shortly after 11pm.

"A woman had rung 111 to report that her 20-year-old boyfriend had been shot by an offender who then fled the property in a utility vehicle.

"Police secured the scene to allow ambulance staff to treat the victim who was then airlifted to Waikato Hospital where he is currently in a critical but stable condition."

Thornton said police units, including the Waikato Armed Offenders Squad, then searched the area and at about 3.20am officers found the body of a man at a Tower Rd address.

"The 21-year-old had suffered a gunshot wound and police do not believe his death is suspicious," said Thornton.

No one else is being sought in relation to either of the shootings.

Forensic investigations will be carried out at both addresses.
