The pilot and sole occupant of an Air Force CT4 air trainer is dead after the aeroplane crashed in the Manawatu on Thursday morning.

The two-seater aircraft crashed near the Raumai weapons range, west of Bulls in the Manawatu, about 8am on Thursday, Air Force spokesman Squadron Leader Kavae Tamariki says.

The two-seater trainer from the Red Checkers display team took off the Ohakea Air Force Base and was conducting a practice routine.

The pilot's name has not yet been released, as the family has yet to be informed.

The circumstances of the crash are being investigated.

A spokesman from St John Ambulance central communications says paramedics had removed one body from the scene.

An air force Iroquois has gone to the accident site.
