A contingent of 133 New Zealand Defence Force personnel will leave from Christchurch on Tuesday, headed for a six month stint in Afghanistan.
The majority are bound for the Bamyan Province where they will serve in the provincial reconstruction team.
The remaining 10 will take up roles within International Stabilisation Force Headquarters, at a Canadian multinational hospital in Khandahar and with the British Army training the Afghan National Army.
The move comes after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had a meeting with New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully in Washington.
Clinton paid tribute to the efforts of New Zealand's SAS troops in Afghanistan and said New Zealand's military's help with reconstruction in the Bamyan province has been a model for other nations.
