New Zealand has been rated the top country for managing its marine and fishery resources.

New Zealand had the highest aggregate score in a comprehensive international assessment of 53 countries, Fisheries Minister Phil Heatley said. The research was published in the Marine Policy journal.

While it was an encouraging result there was still work to be done, Heatley said.

"We cannot afford to rest on our laurels."

New Zealand was leading the world in many aspects of marine resource management, particularly marine mammal protection and a lack of industry subsidies, Heatley said.

Those involved in fisheries management could be "justifiably proud", he said.

"We must move forward with our world-class fisheries management practices."
