The feline thought to be the country's oldest - not surprisingly - lives in a retirement village.

Smokey, a 24-year-old blue Burmese is owned by Ian Clarke and Jean Elliot, who live in a retirement village in Auckland.

Smokey's age equates to 111 human years.

Elliott does not claim to have a secret to get a cat that old.

According to Guinness World Records, the oldest cat was Creme Puff, who was owned by an American and died four years ago at the ripe old age of 38.
