The New Zealand Press Association, the country's only independent news agency, filed its last story tonight after 132 years.
The final message said: "Since 1880 there have been hundreds of thousands of stories and hundreds of millions of words recording our country's development and daily doings.
"We now sign off. It has been a pleasure and a privilege."
The organisation is closing down after Fairfax Media, joint shareholder along with fellow newspaper publisher APN, decided to pull the plug.
NZPA's team of 40 journalists, based in Boulcott St, Wellington, with branches in Auckland and Sydney, is being made redundant.
Labour leader Phil Goff was among those to lament the agency's demise. He Tweeted today : "NZPA's last day. They've done a great job over many years and I've enjoyed working with the many talented journalists who've worked there."
The closure of the agency was also featured on the BBC's news homepage today.
The supply of NZPA content to tvnz.co.nz was removed in February this year after the agency declined to renew the subscription. News of the agency's closure followed in April.
APN and Fairfax have both set up their own national news bureaus to supply their newspapers and websites and Australian news agency AAP is starting a New Zealand service shortly.
