New Zealand defence officials are monitoring the situation in Afghanistan following the United Nations' decision to evacuate or relocate more than half of its foreign staff in the country.

One New Zealand staff member is with the UN in Afghanistan, working as a regional military liaison officer.

A spokesman for defence Minister Wayne Mapp says the New Zealand UN staff member is unlikely to be affected by the evacuation as he's not stationed in Kabul.

His role involves liaising between Afghan authorities and the United Nations.

The move by the UN to shift its international staff follows an attack by Taliban militants in Kabul last week, in which five foreign UN staff were killed.
