A nutritionist is slamming the dangerous levels of caffeine in some energy supplements.
Nutrition Foundation secretary Nikki Hart says Demon Energy shots contain 3000 milligrams of caffeine, which is 50 times the amount in a good cup of coffee.
She says the product is slipping through a legal loophole because it is being sold as a dietary supplement rather than as a food.
Hart says caffeine is a stimulant with both good and bad effects. She is concerned people don't understand that if you take big doses there will be physiological consequences such as headaches, neurological issues and an increased heart rate.
The Food Safety Authority is investigating the labelling of energy shots as dietary supplements.
