An 5.7 magnitude earthquake has struck near Turangi this afternoon.
The quake struck at 12.50pm today at a depth of 10 kilometres south of Turangi, near Lake Taupo.
It was at a depth of 90km.
The quake was felt throughout much of the lower North Island, described as a moderate vibration or jolt generally noticed indoors.
Turangi police said there were no reports of damage or problems arising from the quake in the area.
