North bound traffic heavy but flowing

The NZ Transport Agency says traffic heading north of Auckland is heavy but flowing smoothly.

Holidaymakers are crawling along State Highway One between Auckland and Northland, with traffic particularly slow through the towns of Wellsford and Warkworth.

However, volumes are much lighter in comparison to the congestion on of SH1 on Sunday.

NZTA spokesman Ewart Barnsley says some 21,300 motorists used the toll road on Sunday. The peak was at around midday, when more than 2000 cars used the stretch of motorway in one hour. Total trips outside holiday periods average around 13,000 a day.

Barnsley says that is the largest number of travellers ever to have used the stretch.

The Transport agency reminds people that SH16 is an alternative route north that avoids possible congestion on SH1.

It can be accessed from the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) through Helensville, or from the Silverdale interchange on SH1 north of Auckland.
